January 24 – February 28, 2021 This is the first of a six-course series on the Mahayana path which builds on the foundation of Hinayana, expanding from our concern for our own happiness to include that of others. These teachings introduce us to the possibility of transforming even the most negative emotions into positive states of mind. By working with our emotions and exploring the illusory nature of all phenomena, we can develop a heart of genuine compassion. Mahayana also introduces us to the idea of buddha nature — the understanding that our hearts and minds are, from the beginning, the same as the Buddha’s.
Topics covered in Heart of Daring include The Four Immeasurables, bodhicitta and the Bodhisattva Vow. Each class follows our regular weekly practice of calm abiding (shamatha) meditation. You’re welcome to join us for both meditation and study or just one of these.
To derive the most benefit from this course, it’s recommended that students have some familiarity with such key Buddhist teachings as karma, individual liberation, selflessness, and the Four Noble Truths. Some experience with basic (shamatha) meditation practice is also helpful.
Study materials cost $15 and can be purchased at the Nalanda Store here.
If it’s likely you’ll want to take multiple Mahayana courses, you may be able to save on shipping by ordering multiple courses at once. Contact the Nalanda Store through its website for guidance.
