Join a three-hour cleanup and construction event June 8 around Camp Second Chance, a clean and sober homeless encampment that provides emergency shelter in tents and “tiny homes.”
White Center Community Development Association is organizing the event, in the area around the camp at 9701 Meyers Way South in Seattle. They also will provide food and possibly live music.
Projects will include cleaning up areas near the camp. and removing weeds at local parks. The association is funding construction of two new homes at the camp, as well as paint and supplies needed to finish 10 unpainted tiny homes. Volunteers also will build furniture and shelving.
The 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. event will be followed with a BBQ lunch and neighborhood party at the camp for all participating volunteers.
Camp Second Chance provides shelter for up to 50 people, and is managed by its residents in partnership with the Low Income Housing Institute. It’s among six encampments authorized and funded by the City of Seattle.
