Questions from Contemplative Interludes with Mitra Mark Power

Here you will find the questions posed during the contemplative interludes for review.

Friday 26 June 2020

What is in our way of becoming wiser?
To overcome the stumbling blocks. How do I exaggerate or understate my qualities so I don’t see the wisdom? How do I exaggerate? How do I diminish so that I  don’t experience and express wisdom?

How can I be wiser?
Look at the question from the point of view of immediacy. How do I learn from my experience? How can I learn how not to fall into the hole? What else can I learn about how I get in my own way? In the sense of exaggerating and in the sense of minimizing?

What is in my way?
How do I express myself in ways that I am not proud of? How do I get caught in patterns that get in my way?

Saturday 27 June 2020

“We can choose to go beyond our usual anxieties and negativities by bringing kindness to ourselves and others.” Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche

These are guidelines to “open the experience”. The beginning of an exploration.

  1. Be Fresh – have a beginner’s mind, fresh and open. A mind of positive uncertainty, perhaps a little vulnerable and innocent. “What is kindness like?”
  2. Be Inquisitive – How does it feel to be inquisitive and kind? What is my mind like when I’m kind. How do I see the world when I’m inquisitive and kind?
  3. Be Calm – Settle into your body. Feel the sensations of being alive. Settle into a feeling of kindness. Calm is kind.
  4. Be Aware – let your awareness shine. Awareness with kindness is like the light of the sun and the moon – warming and cooling as needed. Without boundary…
  5. Be Reflective – carry this learning and insight into your life. How will I keep this learning alive in my life? What will I do today to keep this learning alive? How will I apply it – one small step?

Sunday 28 June 2020

Living Fully – creating a portable practice to Be Wise and Go Kind in my life

Paraphrasing from Rinpoche’s first talk: We need to have Wisdom, kindness, and skill in balance, then we can overcome barriers and succeed in living fully.

This balance helps us overcome our stumbling blocks and build wisdom and kindness by applying them in a way that’s personal and relevant to our lives. One way of doing that is by creating a portable practice.

Preparation – Remembering our motivation

  1. When I wake in the morning I’ll reflect on one way I can “Be wise” and “Go kind”

– Start small – no matter your level of experience

– One small action or word that you can build on

– Today I’ll experiment with “Just drop it”

  1. I’ll apply the practice (3x – or many more) during the day – and especially when I feel like I’m about to not be wise or kind.

Portable practice to “Live Fully” in the moment

  1. Be wise – “Just drop it”

– Allow yourself to settle/feel and observe your experience / breathe

– Just drop it – hold an object that represents a habit (of exaggeration or minimizing) / feel what it’s like to let it go/breathe

– On the spot you may not have an object – imagine it – see it in your mind – feel it in your body / feel what it’s like to “just drop it” (the concepts that want to make a big deal in this moment) / you might tense and relax your fists / breathe

  1. Go kind – “Make kindness into a habit”

– Continuing to breathe and release – nourish a sense of openness

– Let your awareness expand to include your heart

– What does it mean to be kind to myself / to others in this moment?

– Breathe in kindness – Breathe out kindness – imagine there’s no barrier

– “There’s no limit to loving kindness. If you can be kind to one thing, you can find all things and beings there. Everything is present.” Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche

  1. Live fully – Apply these commitments in my life

– Appreciate this moment of pausing – “I’ve remembered to apply my practice!”

– Commit to returning to this wise-kind practice

– Carry the imprint forward

o Opening the question: “How, in this very moment, might I express any amount of     being wise and going kind…?”  the question is an invitation.

o Feel the commitment in your body as well as your mind – let it settle in

o Now, Go Kind….

* You can find more tools and resources for working wisely and kindly with emotions in Rinpoche’s book Emotional Rescue.

Nitartha Institute – for higher buddhist studies

Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche founded Nitartha Institute in 1996, under the guidance of Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche and Khenpo Tsültrim Gyamtso Rinpoche

Originally established as the first English shedra in the West, Nitartha Institute was modeled after the Tibetan monastic universities (Tibetan བཤད་ grw bshad grva meaning ‘place of learning’.)

Today it is a unique program combining study and mediation based on a genuine and authentic lineage and is available in its various forms in North America, Europe, and online.

Join us online this year for Nitartha’s Summer Institute!

Nitartha’s Summer Institute is a month-long program divided into three 9-day sessions, with courses continuing from one session to another. You are welcome to join us for one, two, or all three sessions!

This year, the Summer Institute will be held online rather than in person. It is our wish that these opportunities to study and practice the dharma will be helpful during these difficult times, wherever you are in the world.
